Joachim Splichal’s Guide to Yosemite, California

Patina Restaurant Group’s founder and chef steps out of the kitchen to take his kids skiing

JoachimSplichal“Years ago I cooked two meals at the Ahwahnee Hotel, and I brought my kids, who were maybe six years old. I had to work a lot, but we had an amazing time as a family. We did a couple of hikes, went skiing at Badger Pass, built snowmen, and had a snowball fight. It was very special. Just sitting in the hotel’s outside dining room is a tremendous experience. The big trees, the snow, the architecture—all that beauty—reminds me of the Black Forest, where I come from. It feels like home away from home.”

GET ON BOARD: Children four to six years old can learn to ski and snowboard with Badger Pass’s Badger Pup program, a one-lesson ($67) or two-lesson ($87) course that includes rental equipment and a helmet.
