L.A. adores giving out awards. Flick a spangle anywhere in the city and you’ll sure to hit someone holding a trophy and waxing on about their “journey.” The AFI Life Achievement Award Tribute to Steve Martin airing this Saturday on TBS at 10:00 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., however, is absolutely worth your time. I attended the taping last week at the Dolby, and everyone from Conan O’Brien to Diane Keaton to Queen Latifah to Tina Fey to Steve Carrell got onstage to talk about Martin’s movies, music, comedy, writing, and to simply let him have it. The nice twist with this one is that it is an extremely touching tribute as well (I counted at least three times were Martin was thisclose to crying). People like the guy. Keaton, Latifah, Martin Short, and Jack Black were even inspired to sing.

“How do I top this parade of stars who’ve been so, so funny?” Martin asked when he finally took the stage. “Easy.”

If you miss the show Saturday, TCM will be showing an encore on July 30th at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT as part of an all night tribute to Martin.
