The Best Of LA

This magazine threw its annual Best of LA party this year at SmogShoppe—a fun, eclectic space that filled with chefs, librarians, and the residents of Carroll Avenue (winner of Best Street With Historic Houses) as the night went on. Being the smooth customer than I am, I kept going up to folks trying to guess which category they won. I only aced it when I ran into Jonathan Clough, the marketing and events manager for Sweet! I concur: Sweet! is the only place I stop to buy Wonka’s Scrumdiddlyumptious bar and the guy they have playing Willy Wonka in the enormous candy store is a riot. A few jalapeno drinks later (so good they burned all the way down) I sat down by the librarians from the Central Library (the children’s library on the building’s second floor was a winner) for a happy chat. The Best Framer (Ballard’s Artwork Framing) was already a tad anxious about getting too much business (a good problem to have) and Rahul Nath (Best Bollywood Aerobics) from Heartbeat House in Atwater Village said he was headed to Detroit to film a movie. At the end of the night there was an Acura full of goody bags and winners went into the night having been surrounded by people who appreciate their hard work. Congrats to all!
