As someone who has covered social events in Los Angeles going on almost twenty years now, I always say—everyone comes to L.A. The member-only network PTTOW! Held their annual summit this weekend at Terranea resort in Palos Verdes bringing together some of the people doing exciting work in every field from QuickSilver to Google Glass. The OC Register calls the conference “The TED event of the marketing world” and that was exactly what I was thinking as I listened to Neil Blumenthal co-founder and co-CEO of Warby Parker talk about designing eyewear that looks good on Instagram and putting pneumatic tubes in their stores to deliver glasses from the stockroom to the retail floor. Olympic athlete Kerri Walsh Jennings was on before Blumenthal chatting about dominating in the face of pressure. It all could not have been more interesting and the small group who’d gathered (waiting list for the group tops out right now at 500) was super into it.
The PTTOW’ers held their first Nelson Mandela Changemaker Awards on the last day of the conference. Mandela’s grandson Kweku Mandela handed out awards to Sharon Stone (in her best resort wear), Dustin Yellin and Hugh Evans. Stone talked about starting her works with HIV/AIDS. “I was in Cannes,” she said. “Elizabeth Taylor couldn’t make it to an event and they asked if I would take her place. Something inside me said, how can you not show up for that? I was terrified. Now we have a 2020 goal for a cure for HIV/AIDS.” People like Shaun White and singer Aloe Blacc all showed up during the three day summit.
The group’s next to-do is in the Hamptons. I am not sure if it will be like some of their other get togethers which one member described as “A little bit Burning Man, a little bit business conference.” All I know is, how can you not dig a group who talks about “vision boards” with gold metals in Rio on it?
