Opening Night: Bullets Over Broadway at the Pantages

How can you not love a show that features dancing gangsters and singing hot dogs?

I have never seen a showstopper in a production…until now. It happened almost halfway through the opening night of Bullets Over Broadway at the Pantages. There wasn’t just a standing O after Jeff Brooks (who plays gangster Cheech) and his fellow hoods sang and danced their way through ‘T’ain’t Nobody’s Bizness If I Do”—there was an encore. The number was so electric that they finished to deafening applause, followed by one more round from an appreciative crowd.

I loved the Woody Allen movie this show was based on, so no big surprise I liked this story about a Broadway production backed by the mob and the hijinks that ensue. There were memorable songs, and the dancing and acting were terrific. Along with the cast of characters onstage there were the Pantages regulars in the audience: Garcelle Beauvais, Fred Willard, Illeana Douglas, Ken Davitian, Mindy Sterling, and Joann Worley. They had some more fun in the lobby bar at the cast party. This show is a riot. Check it out—it runs until January 24.
