Los Angeles Magazine’s 50th-Anniversary Party

We hit the big 5-0 and decided to throw a bash that celebrated the past and looked to the future

We wish you could have been there, but the fire marshal kept a close eye on us and more than a few hundred well-wishers who gathered at 5900 Wilshire to celebrate our 50th anniversary. There were two mayoral candidates—city controller Wendy Greuel and councilwoman Jan Perry, plus county supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky and WeHo city councilmember Abbe Land. We also spotted a few of the magazine’s L.A Story subjects—A. Scott Berg, Dean Zanuck, Jenna and Bodhi Elfman, and George Takei (we’re getting a chuckle from his part in the upcoming flick Larry Crowne)—illustrators Gary Baseman and Syd Mead, Flipping Out star Jeff Lewis, downtown czar Hal Bastian, DJ Rodney Bingenheimer, political doyenne Roz Wyman, developer Wayne Ratkovich (thanks for letting us trick out your building’s lobby), Courage Campaign founder Rick Jacobs, KCRW GM Jennifer Ferro, and loads more (see the slide show below). Chef John Sedlar, of Rivera and Playa, prepared updated L.A. classics (Cobb salad in a shot glass and tasty cocktails like the Hollywoodland made with SVEDKA vodka and other goodness), and the Montage Beverly Hills’ Richard Ruskell (seen on the Food Network’s Last Cake Standing) made an extraordinary cake (we were still eating the ’70s the next day). I can also still hear the eerie sounds the theremin player created in the 2061 Future Lounge and was impressed by the renditions of future Los Angeles magazine covers (winner Lauren Blair had lasers coming out of a dolphin’s eyes). A time capsule, curated by our Ask Chris columnist Chris Nichols, goes underground this week. Check in with LAmag.com for details. We’ll see you in another 50.
