5 People Who Could Take Ricky Gervais Down a Notch at Sunday’s Golden Globes

These nominees and presenters could really liven up the show

Everyone is waiting to see who Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais slams at Sunday’s awards show. But the line-up of presenters and nominees are full of people who can out-quip, out-nasty, and out-drink him. Here’s who we hope will dish it out as well as they can take it.

Schumer is presenting (that sets you up as an easy Gervais target) and is also nominated for Trainwreck. She is at the top of her game and the comeback queen. We almost feel sorry for Gervais if he singles her out. Almost.

You know you kinda want to see The Big Short nominee go ballistic. He’s the English Mark Wahlberg (who is also presenting at the awards) which means he’s kinda bad-ass and seems to have a hair trigger. Is Cedars-Sinai on stand-by?

Lily Tomlin

Oh we hope Gervais tries to pick on Tomlin. This comedy legend would have him for breakfast. She’s up for two awards—one for her work in the movie Grandma and one for her role in Netflix’s Grace and Frankie—so that ups the odds.

The Trumbo nominee is just great fun at award shows. He made out with Julia Louis-Dreyfus at the Emmys and when a speech went too long at the Independent Spirit Awards a few years ago he hoped onstage to give the guy a cocktail to get him to wind it up.

Mel Gibson

Good on Mel for signing up for presenting duty again. Who can forget Gervais’s last intro for him? “I like a drink as much as the next man. Unless the next man … is Mel Gibson.” The guy’s got guts.
