Fourteen years before the world would meet detective Olivia Benson, Mariska Hargitay was a young actor just getting her start in Hollywood. In 1985, Hargitay spoke to Los Angeles magazine about her upcoming movie Summer Release (the title was later changed to Welcome to 18, complete with awesome ’80s VHS art.) In the film, her character, described by Hargitay as a “volleyball stud,” meets a girl “whose boyfriend is like a gangster, and he sets us up, and we go to jail and meet weird prostitute types.” Prostitutes? Jail? Teens playing volleyball? It might be a stretch to say that Hargitay predicted her future career-defining role, but she certainly did set the tone. All her character needs is a scholarship to Hudson University and we’ve got the trappings of a proto-SVU episode.
