Whitney Port’s Guide to Looking Good on Instagram

The reality star-turned-designer’s pre-selfie beauty secrets, spilled

Call me a fashion voyeur, but I love nothing more than losing myself for a few minutes in the online lives of my favorite fashionistas, the ladies who make everyday basics (like cardigans or cashmere pull overs) somehow covetable. It’s not just style that’s perfected in their overexposed shots on Instagram—expert beauty tricks help complete the look.

In the market for IG-worthy tips to steal, I thought who better to ask than former reality star-turned-designer Whitney Port? What I adore about Whitney’s feed in particular is that she’s not a shameless selfie taker; she never looks totally staged. She looks natural, pretty, and relaxed—like she’s having fun. I feel like I’m following a friend, which is so much more inspiring than an over-styled brand persona. That French twist she wore? I think I can do it, too. And, I figure if Whitney has nearly 800K IG followers ogling her day after day, she must know a thing about perfecting her skin, selecting makeup colors, and even working her angles.

I caught up with Whitney in the middle of her hectic fall fashion schedule at the recent Westfield Style Bash at the Westfield Century City, and nudged her to share what products illuminate her skin and which work well with her signature parted-down-the-middle waves. Here’s what she told me:

I find photo filters end up making lipsticks and glosses look super matte. What kind of lip products do you find work best on Instagram?
I have noticed that natural is better when it comes to my lip color. I’ve been really into chubby lip pencils lately. My favorites have been the matte pink Tarte pencil in Lucky and the Floralies Satin lip pencil by NARS, which is a nude but has a little shine.

Do you think there is one color that works perfectly on every girl, no matter what her skin tone?
I love golds and warm tones for the eyes. I recently wore Bobbi Brown’s Beach Bronze Cream shadow on my lids—that looked amazing. That paired with the soft peach Coraline lipgloss by Smashbox is Instagram-proof!

And, do selfie angles really matter?
“From above” is my motto!

What’s your one gotta-do-it tip for getting flawless skin before tossing a filter on any pic?
Moisturizer! I love the Embryolisse moisturizer for my skin. And I mix a tiny but of Josie Maran’s Argan Illuminizer into my foundation for a subtle glow. Only conceal where you need. I love the Cle De Peau concealer and use my finger to apply.
