What to Wear There: Brunch by the Sea

A fireplace, an ocean breeze, and lobster make for a stylish Sunday afternoon

Last Sunday I drove out to Santa Monica from Hollywood to have brunch at One Pico. My friends think it’s crazy that I drive to the beach almost every weekend even when it is cool outside, but to me a 40-minute drive is a small price to pay for drinking my coffee seaside.

Santa Monica is the first place I lived in Los Angeles. My father had an apartment there for a few years when I was in my early twenties, and I would fly out from New York like a snowbird every January and stay until March, auditioning during pilot season. I was looking for acting work, sure, but I also wanted a break from snow, sleet, and freezing rain. Fall and winter are still my favorite seasons in Los Angeles. The temps make me feel like I’m getting away with something, plus being able to wear a heavy coat with bare legs and red lips is one of the most glamorous things.

On Sunday I wore a plaid skirt from Madewell with a black turtleneck I bought at Otte NY. I subscribe to the wisdom that it’s impossible to regret buying a black cashmere blend turtleneck. I layer this one under little dresses or sweaters. Here I paired it with my motorcycle jacket, which I scored on Ebay, and a new Maybelline lipstick called “Siren In Scarlet” that I got at a Latina 30under30 party last week.

Here’s one last fashion tip for dining at One Pico: Don’t leave your sunnies in the car. The dining room is very bright and the lobster brunch tastes better when you’re wearing shades, just like Joe Biden’s ice cream cone.
