Every year, The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) recognizes rising designers with the Vogue Fashion Fund award. Jenna Leyon, creative director and president of J. Crew and four-time judge of the annual competition, announced that rising Los Angeles-based designer Juan Carlos Obando was one of this year’s. The winning designers created collections that were “just the right balance of their styles and ours,” wrote Leyon in her online announcement.
Obando’s line for J. Crew is a blend of his naturally fluid style and J. Crew’s signature prep aesthetic. The free-spirited vibe of his hometown is reflected in the Gemma Sweatshirt ($128). “The sweatshirt is the new silk blouse,” says Obando, and we completely agree—sweatshirts are getting pretty fancy. His collection is available for purchase online.
