New Launch: MAC Alluring Aquatic

Embrace the wet hot summer with these new glistening shades

If there’s one thing you know about MAC, it’s that every time they launch a new collection, it’s bound to sell out before you make your way to the nearest counter. Find a gloss you like? Good luck scoring a tube on eBay, which often sells for nearly three times the original price. The brand’s colors are simply that much fun.

Launching this week is the Alluring Aquatic collection of beach-ready bronzes, pearly nudes, dirty olives, and gypsy pinks—available in a limited-edition teal packaging—that are inspired by rippling turquoise waters and glimmering grains of sand off some pristine island.

The trick to freshening up your summer look is choosing a multi-dimensional brownish shade of bronze. MAC senior makeup artist John Stapleton says we should ditch the matte nudes: “Besides glowing cheeks and eyes being on trend, it’s an uphill battle fighting off the heat, so you might as well embrace the look of humid skin. When we get more sun, our skin tends to get dry. Using a mineralize powder on the face brings back that luminescent look of youth. Skin looks like it’s had its own vacation, splashed with water. There is a sexiness implied, a rapid heartbeat, a sportiness that is alluring.”

If you’re anything like me, you know contouring like a Kardashian is better left to the paparazzi pros. For an actually wearable, sexy-in-seconds flushed look, Stapleton says, “On the apples of your cheeks, apply a pearl blush with a soft, round brush. Smile and sweep the product across the cheeks. The more glow we add here the more volume we add. It’s a cheaper alternative to a filler.”

And for my basic boring brown eyes? “A sure fire way to light up the eyes is to go smoky with matte brown shadows that compliment your skin tone and your summer tan. Then with a firm brush like the MAC 252 Large Shader Brush, press a pearlized shadow in the center of the eyelid for a wet look.”

And to prevent that telltale flat finish I see all too often on Instagram, he adds, “Don’t forget to dress the rest of the face and body. Using a smaller brush, apply a mineralize powder like MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Global Glow down the nose, into the cupid’s bow, under the brow bone and dust across the chest and down the shins if you are wearing shorts. There’s nothing weirder than a shiny face and matte body.” Nothing weirder, folks!
