Full disclosure: I’m one of those girls you’d like to hate. I rarely get zits. Now blackheads? That’s what you and I have in common.
Given the amount of products I test on a weekly basis and the semi-oily T-zone skin I’ve got, and I get way more than my share of blackheads. Being in the beauty biz also means I’ve heard of some crazy ways to cope; think baby scissors and toothpicks to flick the blackheads out of the pore or Emerald’s Glue layered on top of the skin then yanked off when dry. I once tried spreading an egg white over my nose and waited ten insufferably long minutes for it to dry before scrubbing it off with an old toothbrush. #BeautyFail.
Most experts agree the absolute worst thing you can do is squeeze or pop them yourself, as it can make skin inflamed, infected and even cause scarring. And sharp tools really ought to be left in the hands of pro aestheticians who know how to dig deep without leaving a telltale pockmark.
The good news is that in reality, beating blackheads takes nothing more than a good spot treatment; after all, they’re just oxidized gunk (sebum and dirt) stuck in your plugged up pores.
Dr.Jart+ Blackhead Master Patch ($35), a nifty set of individually packed, two-step strip system, does the trick. The first step uses a dry patch and is designed to extract the blackhead with coral powder, while the second patch, which is wet, tightens up the newly cleansed pore with witch hazel. The strips are safe enough to use multiple times a week to prevent blackheads from turning into zits, though be sure to remove the painless strips like a Band-Aid, otherwise they’re a bit of a pain to take off.
My final take: these master patches don’t hurt and do work. Nothing to hate about that.
