Style editor Linda Immediato takes requests from readers, colleagues, and friends and recreates grown up versions of looks from their childhood. This Friday, it’s LA mag’s deputy editor Nancy Miller’s pick— 9 1/2 Weeks
“Kim Basinger in 9 1/2 weeks had a lot of great outfits in that movie, but I remembering being young and loving the trench coat, white shirt, hat combo. I wasn’t actually allowed to watch that movie but I snuck parts of it on cable at a friend’s house.
What I love about this look is that it’s kind of like the ’80s update of the Lauren Bacall style trenchcoat with a sexy Garbo-esque masculinity. (I didn’t know that then, of course) I think when I was a pre-teen, I loved how pretty she was and the whimsical bowler-type hat and oversized trenchcoat (note it’s not fitted) seemed really cool to me—like she wasn’t trying too hard, which I loved, and it had a messy, tomboy element that related to me. Of course, in other parts of the movie she’s a smokin’ sexpot in skintight Armani etc and that definitely looked awesome too, but for me, at that age, I think this look defined for me what I would later understand as “personal chic.” I’d wear that today in a minute — in fact I bought a trench coat that shape and color a few years ago at a thrift shop, but I get the feeling that you really need to buy something well-tailored to make it look THIS good.”
