Fall Fashion Can Wait: The Perfect Indian Summer Shoe is Here

Just as our summer sandals were starting to look a little too worn and a little too bare comes the happy discovery of a new collection of flats from Laguna Beach-based brand Painted Bird. The shoes, designed by Jennifer Sampson and Nicole Halpern, are a step apart from your average ballet flat: coming in a variety of color combinations and hand-crocheted, they have the cozy appeal of end-of-summer throw blanket and a global, boho vibe (“We’ll never do a solid shoe, let’s put it that way,” says Sampson of the style). Available online September 1 with or without an ankle strap and carried in some Anthropologie locations, this particular collection was designed with fall runway trends—namely, jewel tones— and the Southern California lifestyle in mind.  “We are so fortunate we live in one of the most beautiful beach towns in the world,” says Sampson. “Those surroundings continue to inspire us.” So while we’ll be grabbing for our stacked boots and heels soon enough, we’ll be slipping into Indian Summer—a small but stylish salute to the city—first.
