After making patterns for a handful of L.A. designers, Corinne Grassini struck out on her own in 2004. She named her line Society for Rational Dress after a 19th-century British reform movement that championed unrestrictive clothing. Brushing Up: Grassini finessed her expertise last year at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design, the London alma mater of Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney. Aesthetic: “I juxtapose fabrics to create a balance between hard and soft, gritty and tender.” Her approach caught the eye of Barneys New York, which just picked up her T-shirts embellished with chains (from her new second line, Guild).
