Behind-the-Scenes of Los Angeles Magazine’s Fall Fashion Feature

Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, and others inspire our ode to ’70s boho style

Boho is currently having a major moment in fashion. It started last spring, picked up steam this fall, and, if the current New York Fashion Week runways are any indication, the trend will sail straight through to next spring. Which is fine by me. Bohemian style with a ’70s bent has always been my jam. So when I set out to plan our September fall fashion feature, I knew that it was the trend I wanted to focus on.

I envisioned Joni Mitchell (with a touch of Brigitte Bardot) roaming through her Laurel Canyon home bathed in L.A.’s trademark golden glow. Actress (and blogger yourzenlife.com) Teresa Palmer was perfect for the part. She’s a natural beauty who, incidentally, prefers boho style, too. The location proved harder to nail down. So many Laurel Canyon shooting locations have been remodeled it’s hard to find one with the right throwback vibe. I finally found the perfect spot on Airbnb. The cozy retro home provided the right backdrop for a barefoot ’70s era chanteuse.

Pulling looks for the shoot was like shopping for my dream wardrobe. Some of my faves—the quilted patchwork dresses from Burberry and the Etro jumpsuit (the tailoring gave the bust a retro silhouette, and we all agreed “we love a ’70s boob”). I want a pair of those teal blue suede boots from Etro so badly.

In addition to Joni Mitchell, I looked to other L.A. ladies for inspiration. Check out the gallery of some of the images I tacked to my inspiration wall—from vintage photos to runway pics.
