Quick Take: The Master

P.T. Anderson’s latest opus comes to DVD

A decade and a half after the manic, pornzapoppin’ Boogie Nights, Paul Thomas Anderson has become America’s poet of visual silence, in a manner that more and more recalls Stanley Kubrick. The story of a cult leader, his devoted wife, and his disturbed disciple—all played splendidly by the Oscar-nominated trio of Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, and Joaquin Phoenix—The Master (Anchor Bay, $30) is as singular as any movie that Anderson has made yet.
