The approachable Italian menu features everything from spicy Calabrian vodka pasta featuring canestri (little baskets) to savory cacio e pepe pizza and meatballs crafted with Italian sausage and ground beef simmered in zesty tomato sauce. The full-service sister to Triple Beam Pizza in old Highland Park Post Office features Matt Molina’s seasonal, globally influenced Italian cooking. Prized pasta dishes include delicate tagliolini tossed with duck ragú and cappellacci (little hats) filled with butternut squash and plated with browned butter, amaretti and sage. Atypical dishes include griddled cauliflower served atop tahini with walnut raisin caper relish and pork ribs marinated with palm sugar and sambal, a dish more likely in Southeast Asia. Five cocktails in either single (4 ounce) or four-portion (16 ounce) servings each feature a different spirit. Hippo Old Fashioned incorporates seasonal fruits and spices and Mariachi on the Beach is a uniquely bright tequila cocktail co-starring passion fruit, Aperol, coconut, citrus, curry bitters and chile salt.

HomeState

Texas native Briana Valdez founded HomeState in 2013 and now runs four locations that specialize in Tex-Mex comfort food. Valdez’s LinkedIn profile lists her as “Chief Queso Ambassador,” so by all means indulge in molten cheese that’s available simply with chips or loaded with ground beef, guacamole, pico de gallo and sour cream. Tacos are also a major draw, teaming corn tortillas with everything from shredded brisket to spicy achiote marinated chicken, and migas, scrambled eggs with crispy tortilla strips, cheddar, and pico de gallo. They even offer Frito pie in the bag. The patio-centric Highland Park location has a full liquor license and sells four cocktails to go, including frozen margaritas and spicy palomas. Ranchwater is a sparkling tequila, lime, Combier and Topo Chico cocktail that would go down just as easy in Texas Hill Country as NELA.

Osteria La Buca

This Italian restaurant has thrived near Paramount Studios since 2005. They expanded to Sherman Oaks in 2020, but only the original location serves cocktails. Bottled 8-ounce drinks include riffs on classics like the Martini, Negroni, and Old Fashioned. They do have one original drink, a ’67 Ranchero made with tequila, celery shrub, Serrano chilies and lime juice. Hearty food includes house-made pasta like bucatini carbonara, three-cheese pizza, and chicken Parm.
