Every bohemian strip needs a good pho joint. This is Echo Park’s version: a modern fusion spot (think pho tacos) that caters to the area’s hungry, thrifty, banh mi-loving residents. The classic Vietnamese noodle soup here is just average—which is to say it’s still pretty good—but we were pleasantly surprised by the mi quang, fat yellow rice noodles in a shallow puddle of broth piled with pork, shrimp, crushed peanuts, fresh mint, and sesame crackers. Add a squeeze of red rooster sauce and you’re set for the night. Another standout is the banh xeo, a crispy, curry-tinged crepe folded over a filling of either shrimp and pork or tofu. Our only wish? A crustier banh mi baguette. » 1801 W. Sunset Blvd., Echo Park (213-413-3232 or xoiaeats.com). L-D Tue.-Sun. No alcohol. Vietnamese  $
