The Mercantile

The latest addition to George Abou-Daoud’s Hollywood empire (the Bowery, Delancey, the Mission Cantina) is his most ambitious effort yet. Under chef Kris Morningstar (Blue Velvet), this gourmet market and café serves international comfort dishes such as French onion soup, a gooey Cuban sandwich, and a slow-poached tuna noodle casserole. The focus is on homemade: A different sausage is created each day, and the trout rillette is house smoked. A standout selection of condiments and spices lines the shelves, and a deli case offers goodies for takeout. Ice cream flavors like caramel corn are reason enough to come.
