Black Cat Bakery & Cafe

The breads at Black Cat Bakery & Cafe, which is located in the old Mäni’s Bakery spot, come from Homeboy Industries, the nonprofit that provides jobs to former gang members. Everything else is whipped up in-house, including the Mexican chocolate brownies and a toffee carrot cake that would make Bugs Bunny weep. The breakfast and lunch menus are as varied as Fairfax itself, featuring an Italian-style bibimbap made with the grain of the moment, farro, and a delectable kut-ya, a Russian porridge, with warm kasha, quinoa, and farro (again), homemade almond milk, chocolate, and dried cherries. A crabcake comes in salad and sandwich form, and daily soups skew healthful. » 519 S. Fairfax Ave. (323-932-1500). B-L daily. No alcohol. Eclectic      $
