My LA to Z: Landon Donovan

The soccer star took a break while traveling abroad to tell us where he looks forward to going most when he returns to L.A.
It has been a big year for LA Galaxy midfielder Landon Donovan. The Manhattan Beach resident launched into international fame at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where he scored the last-minute, game-winning goal against Algeria, pushing the US Men’s National Team into the second round.

After games, we go to this dive-y kind of place. It’s a bar by the water at the pier. It’s relatively low-key. It’s not crazy. No one bothers you, and it’s a great place to go after games. At least four to five guys from the team go there to hang out.

Whole Foods Market

It’s my mecca! I go to the one on the corner of Rosecrans and PCH/Sepulveda. I like it because it’s healthy and there’s such a variety of food. I call it the Disneyland of grocery stores.

Manhattan State Beach

I love the water. I love the beach. That’s why I live there. Most people who come from out of town want to go to the beach, and I don’t blame them. Once in a while we’ll also go to Hermosa Beach. Hermosa is fun and you can ride a bike there.

Le Pain Quotidien

It’s a French place. I don’t know how to spell or say that last word, but doesn’t it mean the daily bread? I go there at least two to three times a week. It’s hands down my favorite breakfast place, but they have really good lunch and dinner too. It’s really fresh and nearby, so I’m there a lot.

Dodger Stadium & Staples Center

I don’t get into the city much, but I go once or twice a month for sporting events. I love going to Dodgers games. I’m a big sports fan. I also like going to Lakers games or Kings games as often as I can.

It’s a Greek place, and I like it because it’s different. I’m from Southern California. There are a lot of Mexican food shops and really good sushi here. Petros is just different. It’s an upscale place with really different food and really good flavor.

El Tarasco

Speaking of good Mexican food, there is El Tarasco in Manhattan Beach. There are so many places that do Mexican well, but it’s one I like a lot. It’s kind of a taco shop. The place is quiet, and you’re in and out of there really quickly. They’ve got all the essentials: tacos, burritos, guacamole. It’s all you need sometimes.

Hermosa Valley Greenbelt

I have four dogs, and walking with my dogs is my favorite thing to do. I like to take them on different roads through town, especially this strip of land through the center of town called the Greenbelt. Other people like to walk their dogs there too. I love taking them there, and of course they love walking with me.

Santa Barbara

I love being in nature. The problem with what I do is we’re always on our feet and running, so when I get home, I’m usually lazy. When I get the chance, I like to go on walks or hikes and hang on the beach. I really like to hike in Santa Barbara, but I have no idea the names of the hiking trails or areas I’ve gone to. Still, it’s beautiful and there are so many places to go.
