This stretch of sand in Playa del Rey isn’t the prettiest in Southern California, but it’s one of the few that has fire pits, and nothing says summer in winter like roasting marshmallows next to the ocean.

How to do it: Nabbing a coveted fire ring is easier during the cooler months. Plan to arrive at midafternoon with chairs, blankets, firewood, matches, a picnic dinner, and no late-night plans.
