On any given night at Soho House’s L.A. outpost, you’ll find Mia Mastroianni a.k.a. “Tall Mia”, holding it down with her confident, charismatic and commanding presence. She’s hard to miss. When Mia is not crafting up the finest cocktails in the swankiest digs, she’s making appearances on Spike TV’s Bar Rescue and dominating Speed Rack (she repped SoCal in the national finals this year), a competition putting the spotlight on female bartenders around the country and raising money for breast cancer. Here’s what she digs into after a long night tending bar, or otherwise.
So what’s your shift drink?
“I have a few go-to’s. To be honest, after an evening of making countless cocktails behind the bar, the last thing I want to do is come home and mix something complicated for myself. Simple is better. I love to wind down with a cold beer in a hot shower. Sometimes if I prefer something stronger with a more medicinal quality to ease my aching muscles, then I’ll reach for the bourbon – I’m currently working my way through a bottle of Four Roses Small Batch, usually with a single ice cube. If on the off chance I do feel like making a little something special for myself after a long shift, I stick to the classics – a Manhattan (few dashes of angostura bitters, 1oz sweet vermouth, 2 oz bourbon: stirred on the rocks with a luxardo cherry) or a Boulevardier (1oz Campari, 1oz sweet vermouth, 1oz bourbon: stirred on the rocks with an orange twist).”
