OK, so maybe we wouldn’t include a Hurricane in our “Essential Cocktails” tutorial series, but the fact is, the New Orleans specialty has been around since the 40s, and it’s a Mardi Gras tradition.

Now that chef Brandon Boudet’s muffalettas, jambalaya, and beignets are available at Dominick’s and Little Dom’s for the N’awlins holiday, why not wash them down with the rum- and fruit juice-based drink from beverage director Nikki Sunseri.

Or, you can make your own since she was kind enough to share her recipe.

1/2 oz passion fruit puree
3/4 oz fresh orange juice
3/4 oz pineapple juice
1/2 oz lime juice (no pulp)
1/4 oz simple syrup
1 oz strawberry puree
1/2 oz Luxardo Amaretto
1 oz Pussers Navy Rum
1 oz Flor de Caña Extra Dry White Rum

Combine all the ingredients in a shaker with cubed ice. Shake and strain into a glass over new ice. Garnish with an orange slice, and enjoy.

For the fruit purees, Nikki recommends ordering from The Perfect Puree of Napa Valley.

Be sure to bump The Scorpions while making it. It’ll taste that much more like delicious victory in the end.
