The wait is finally over. Lou Amdur’s much-anticipated new wine shop—the one where he can actually hold tastings—is set to open this Friday.
Located on Hillhurst Avenue inside a Los Feliz strip mall, Amdur’s new shop promises natural and unusual wines culled from across Europe’s traditional winemaking regions as well as cult domestic vintners who employ traditional winemaking methods. He’ll also carry a selection of organic hard ciders, sour ales, and a few rare wines that Amdur—who also writes the “Lou on Wine” column for Los Angeles magazine—says befit a special occasion.
Much like his smaller Lou Wine & Provisions, which was located next to Sqirl, Amdur’s wine selections are intended to pair wonderfully with food, which means you’ll find something for that roasted chicken dinner at home or that anniversary feast.
But here’s the real news: Lou Wine Shop & Tastings will also host guided wine tastings several nights per week. The shop’s wine bar, designed by celebrated Los Angeles architect Barbara Bestor, will play host to various winemakers, importers, and other special happenings.
The kickoff event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. this Sunday, September 7, and includes a guided tasting of Champagne Jacquesson paired with Night + Market Song’s off-menu fried chicken sandwich. “Champagne’s lush yeastiness echoes the crunchy richness of the breading,” says Amdur, “while the textural interplay of crispy skin and ethereal bubbles leaves you pondering why you’re not sneaking half bottles into Roscoe’s for lunch every day.” Well, how about that?
Space is limited, so contact [email protected] to make a reservation. Starting tomorrow, the shop will be open Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sundays 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.
