The Great American Beer Festival is like the Oscars of beer. And just as an Oscar can make an actor or actress a household name, so too can a GABF award launch a brewery to the A-list of beer establishments. Not only that, if enough breweries in a region take top honors, that region gains esteem in the eyes of the beer world. And the Los Angeles region took home quite a few honors this year.
Headliners from this year’s awards ceremony include Smog City Brewing Company, which achieved a silver medal for its Kumquat Saison in the Belgian-Style Fruit Beer category. Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach won a silver in the Coffee Beer category for its Mocha Machine coffee brew. The equivalent of best picture went to Los Angeles’ own Pabst Brewing Company. The hipster stalwart took home the award for Large Brewing Company of the Year.
Further afield, Upland’s Dale Bros. Brewery scored a bronze in the American-Style Cream Ale category for Nuff. Ritual Brewing Co. in Redlands nabbed a gold for its Barley Wine-Style Ale, Fat Hog. Noble Ale Works (Anaheim) took home a bronze in the Session India Pale Ale category for Nose Candy.
And one of the most exciting breweries in the area scored two HUGE wins this year at GABF. Anaheim’s Bottle Logic Brewing earned a gold medal for Lagerithm, an American-Style Dark Lager, and another gold for Cobaltic Porter, a Baltic-Style Porter.
Now if you’re looking for a beer to toast the winning breweries, I’ve already listed a few ideas above. Or you could try something new—something that might just brew up a few medals in 2016.
