The city of Los Angeles steals the show at a new exhibition showcasing the work of the late photographer’s three protégés

German-Australian photographer Helmut Newton, whose images have appeared in Vanity Fair, Vogue, and Harper’s Bazaar, is being honored in not one but two ways this month. On June 26, forty of Newton’s provocative nudes and high-contrast landscapes go on display at Perry Rubenstein Gallery’s inaugural exhibition, titled Helmut Newton: Sex and Landscapes. On June 14, Three Boys From Pasadena: A Tribute to Helmut Newton opens at the Art Center College of Design. The latter features the work of George Holz, Just Loomis, and Mark Arbeit, all of whom studied under Newton in the 1970s while attending ACCD. Using L.A. as a backdrop is a common theme in the men’s work.
