It’s hard to miss Chaz Dean’s gigantic billboards looming across Los Angeles. With his blond highlights, perfectly groomed stubble, icy blue eyes, and signature eyeliner, the stylist and owner of Chaz Dean Studio looks like a handsome alien who’s descended from above to tend to the tresses of harried earthlings.
The dramatic Chaz Dean Studio billboards have attracted a cult following in L.A. In normal times, you could expect to see at least a few Halloween revelers clad in Chaz Dean billboard costumes. We caught up with the stylish stylist to see what’s in that perfectly coiffed head of his.
Your billboards are striking and they’ve taken on a life of their own. How long have you had them up and how did you get the idea to do them?
I’ve had them up now for about six years. When I first moved to Los Angeles, I just loved the Angelyne billboards, they were so powerful, so she was my inspiration.
How did you get started?
I came to L.A. from Vermont, took photography classes, went to cosmetology school, then started working in an upscale salon in Bel Air, became the manager, while developing my own line of products. I purchased the salon and built up a clientele of celebrities. I relocated the salon to West Hollywood, where it was renamed Chaz Dean studio, and offered an escape from paparazzi and an environment that was more intimate and secluded.
Who are some of your celebrity clients?
Alyssa Milano, Drew Barrymore, Gwyneth Paltrow, Christina Applegate, Eva Longoria…
What kind of eyeliner do you use?
Laura Geller. I carry it in my backpack. I always carry it, and I do carry and use my own [Wen] products. When people tell me they like my perfume, I pull one out of my bag and hand them one!

Three-hundred dollars. I haven’t changed the price in 20 years.
What do you say to the girl who wants straight hair and doesn’t have it naturally, or the girl with straight hair who wants wavy hair?
I say, ‘Embrace your texture, girl!’ I am known though for being the texture guy and giving women whatever texture they want.
Are you single?
Yes, but if I dated anyone, they would have to bring something to the table.

No, but I have three Labradors! I love dogs. I also have a product line for pets, Wen for Pets.
You’ve made millions with your Wen products. Do you give to charity?
Lots. Gladly. I support many charities including animal, LGBT charities, and Project Angel Food, and their efforts to operate during COVID-19.
