The Best-Smelling Candles to Cozy Up Your Crib

A pumpkin-scent-free list for the holidays
203

Choosing an elegant candle to spruce up your home may not sound like a very important challenge to contend with, but sniffing a deftly scented candle in someone’s home is one mark of elegance. The right scent dotted around the home (or office) can transform even humble abodes into graceful enclaves, and make you grateful for the long fall nights when you don’t have anywhere to go.

Not only do I look forward to this time of year, when the leaves change colors and the faint smell of wood smoke hangs in the air, but I also love the thrill of discovering perfumed candles crafted from exquisite ingredients thoughtfully selected to inspire a momentary escape (or even a romantic vignette) in stores.

But even I have my limits. The one thing I will never do is purchase a pumpkin-scented candle. I’ve had enough of the $500-million pumpkin economy. From pumpkin face masks to pumpkin beard oils, and pumpkin ale to pumpkin dog treats (even my usually non-finicky German Shepherd Tiger turns his nose up at these), gourd overload is not my idea of a sensual or inviting smell. Despite my pumpkin misgivings, fall is the perfect time to imbibe your home with a new scent. Walk right past any apothecary shelves displaying orange colored candles in favor of these beautifully packaged options. They’re the chicest forms of lighting you can shop for.

Oliver & Co. Fig Pulp
Notes:
Fruity fans will adore green fig paired with a brown sugar vanilla that isn’t headache-inducing sweet.

Voluspa Maison Noir Apricot & Aprilia
Notes:
This veers towards citrus with wafts of sweetened juicy apricots and delicate lily blooms layered over black rose.

Tocca Bentota John Robshaw Collection
Notes:
Iconic textiles have been recreated on the candle with creamy bananas, tart pineapple leaves, and a hint of salted sand.

Côte d’Azur
Notes:
Inspired by the widely addictive scent found in the brand’s hair products, this hand-poured candle has a heady mix of bergamot, plum, jasmine, and sandalwood that smells as comforting as it does sultry.

Illume Blackberry Absinthe Cavern Glass
Notes:
Blackberries and sweet orange are blended with Egyptian jasmine petals in an amber-y base, while the chic glass jar is an art piece worth the splurge.

Odin New York 04 Petrana
Notes:
Wholly dark and soulful, this is a floral candle housed in stunning, translucent black glass. The scent is based on black iris and violet leaf and spiced with pepper and earthy vetiver to impart a free-spirited vibe.

LAFCO Orange Blossom & Pomegranate
Notes:
Dispersed through a 100 percent pure, untreated cotton wick, this candle’s crowd-pleasing cheery fruits are bright, sparkling, and reminiscent of vintage Nina Ricci perfumes.

Lollia Calm
Notes:
Perfect for the person who eschews lavender, this candle emits softer hints of hyacinth and iris.

Malin+Goetz Cannabis
Notes:
Well, it won’t give you the munchies, but it’s a decidedly metro ‘man-dle’ thanks to its unisex blend of lemon, orange, pepper, and sweet patchouli.

Parfums de Marly Imperial Rose
Notes:
No list is complete without a velvety rich rose candle. With the crackle of its wood wick, this ultra-luxe version perfectly captures the feeling of a cozy evening spent by a warm fire.
