The Apartment by The Line Just Moved to Melrose Place

The Apartment by The Line is an intimate home store that’s run out of an apartment on Melrose place.

One of the sole second-floor retail spaces on Melrose Place, The Apartment is a subtle addition to the peaceful, tree-lined Melrose Place. Signage is minimal, and because it’s set behind the foliage that lines the street, the shop has the intimate feel of a tree house.

The L.A. Apartment is the second to open, following a space in New York’s SoHo district. It’s under the direction of Vanessa Traina Snow and Melanie Glass, who tell us that each apartment is “informed by a particular city, neighborhood, lifestyle, and creative spirit.”

“I used to live in Los Angeles and have watched Melrose Place evolve into the shopping destination that it is today,” says Traina of making the brand bicoastal, “so it was certainly top of our list. It was also important for us to maintain the retail experience that we have established with The Apartment by The Line New York—the sense of discovery involved in not being ground floor—so when we found this second story space it was too good to be true. We worked with a number of local furniture makers and dealers so the decor certainly makes it feel reflective of its location. It’s much lighter than its New York counterpart.”

Inside you’ll find arranged closets full of clothing by designers including Proenza Schouler and J.W. Anderson; products by SkinLab and Rodin; and home pieces ranging from Helmut Newton photographs to Lasvit floor lamps. And everything, from the charcoal toothbrush in the bathroom to the Fritz Hansen chairs, is for sale.

The Apartment offers private appointments and bespoke services (like wardrobe and interior styling) and will host collaborative events with local designers, artists, and organizations. But according to Traina, the store’s exclusive offerings are the biggest draw. “We worked with Jane Herman of Jean Stories and 3×1 on an exclusive line of denim shorts,” she says. “We have a beautiful jewelry collaboration we worked on with Sophie Buhai. We have an incredible custom scent from Regime des Fleurs. We worked with Atelier de Troupe on some of the gorgeous light fixtures and sconces in the space which are custom. Dough McCollough of DMDM made our bed and benches. It’s a continual project for us which is terribly exciting.” Sold.

The Apartment by The Line is located at 8463 Melrose Place and open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (and by appointment).
