Hit the Lights

Transparency isn’t just a trend in politics. Designers are forgoing traditional shades to showcase the hard-working bulb

The lightbulbs that dangle from today’s fixtures—clear glass globes, futuristic metal cages, and rustic ropes—are, frankly, stark naked. Good thing they’re up to the exposure, displaying stylized filaments that twist and curve in shapes Edison could only dream of. Another reason to like decoratives? They’re exempt from a U.S. ban on incandescent bulbs 40 watts and above and abound in wattages up to 60. If you find LED beams too narrow and fluorescent unflattering, these options will have you glowing.
