Home State: Tex-Mex, Deep in the Heart of Silver Lake

Breakfast tacos and a taste of Central Texas.

Silver Lake’s new Home State is just a week old, but for Briana Valdez, this has been a four year long labor of love from a homesick Texan who moved to L.A. from Austin. Up until now, we haven’t had much Tex-Mex. A year ago, I met Briana through a mutual friend when she was still at Bouchon Beverly Hills and looking for investors. Then, she was trying to find a location, and hitting up the tortillerias of Boyle Heights to find a suitable corn tortilla—her flour tortillas are made from scratch.

Valdez’s new spot is a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll. It merges her experience working with the precision-obsessed Keller, and her dedication to bringing a bona-fide taste of Central Texas to L.A.—complete with Frito Pie in the bag, queso (cheese dip), and migas (eggs scrambled with corn tortilla strips).

Breakfast Tacos

I told you them breakfast tacos were coming! These tasty treats are a sight for sore eyes in this current trend of egg-based tacos in Los Angeles. Real Texas-style flour tortillas with tangy brisket, or the classic scrambled eggs and bacon fill a warm tortilla. The breakfast taco of chorizo and eggs is another fine example of spicy, down-home flavors that should bring a tear to the eyes of Austinites hankering for a taste of the Lone Star state.

Breakfast and lunch service have begun, and soon enough, Valdez will be open in the evenings, too. The ambiance might be a little high falutin’, but don’t let that fool you—Home State is where the heart is.
