Nightlife: The RG Club

High-End Jazz in Shabby-Chic Venice

The Place
Rising from the ashes of beloved dive bar the Red Garter, this minimal Libeskindish space—a first for longtime Venice real estate broker Brad Neal—feels like Little Tokyo’s Blue Whale jazz club brought west. Leather cube seats and sleek cocktail tables dot the interior, while the front parking lot has been hip-flipped into an Asian-themed patio with a fire pit. Upstairs, a restaurant is under construction and will be connected to the club later this year.

The People
Porkpie hats and L.A. Eyeworks frames pack the place. A smattering of silver fox jazzbos mingle with young Westsidahs and confused locals—mainly stoner-rocker types and white-bearded hippies in Hawaiian shirts—who wander in, looking for their old haunt.

The Payoff
Opened in November, RG has yet to solidify its identity, but it has already declared itself a prime spot to see underappreciated LoCal jazz artists like Azar Lawrence (below), Alfredo Rivera, John Beasley, and Henry Franklin.
