An hour from Pasadena, Mount San Antonio—which is to say, Mount Baldy—lords over L.A. At 10,064 feet, it’s the county’s highest point. The steep slopes draw stalwart skiers and boarders after winter storms, but the lifts stay open in summer, when you can ride to Top of the Notch (left), a bar and grill perched on the edge of the world. Have a rib eye to go with the view of the Pacific. For the intrepid, a three-mile hike along the Devil’s Backbone takes you to the summit. On the way home, don’t miss dinner and dancing to live bands at Buckhorn Lodge in Mount Baldy Village, a rustic barroom straight out of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. View map.
