People used to say that Palisades del Rey, aka Surfridge, was a colony for the deaf. It wasn’t. Some 800 homes once stood in the community beside LAX. Today chain-link separates you from what’s left: mangy palms swaying along empty weed-choked streets. The buildings were razed in the 1960s and ’70s largely because of jet noise.
