Stephen Gaspar

Best Outdoor Rock Climbing Instruction, August 2011
Scaling the real thing—as opposed to an indoor contrivance—is the fast track to climbing prowess, and you’re out in the bracing air and sunlight as well. Stephen Gaspar, with the assistance of fellow climber Colin McPike, gives private lessons at Point Dume’s Westward Beach, where you don’t need to look around to sense the waves rolling onto the shore or the seagulls circling above. Gaspar is a stickler for safety and communicates clearly how to move up that face: Shift your hips over the higher foot and keep your core close to the slab. Don’t forget to survey the scene when you get to the top.
