Best Roller Rink, July 2006
From the mirrored balls dangling from the ceiling to the old-fashioned electric signs (all skate, couples only) on the walls, little has changed at Glendale’s Moonlight Rollerway in the 56 years since it opened. Yet the skating rink doesn’t just traffic in nostalgia. Its two-inch-thick tongue-and-groove maple floor provides the best skating surface in town. Programs are available for children and competitive skaters. On Sunday evening, the all-black Savoy Skaters (“We Don’t Skate/We Roll!”) hit the floor, while on Tuesday evening, owner Dominic Cangelosi takes a seat at the Hammond organ tucked into a gazebo above the rink and plays “Chattanooga Choo Choo” and other standards as skaters from 20 to 80 glide by.
