Michael Frederick

Best Body Movement Coach, August 2010

Okay, he does go on a bit about “your instrument,” but there’s no question that Michael Frederick, one of L.A.’s leading teachers of the Alexander Technique, can make anyone feel more stageworthy, even if the closest you come to a stage is facing one at the Taper. Frederick describes the technique as “psycho-physical reeducation.” Translation: It strengthens the mind-body connection so you achieve every physical movement—from walking and sitting to driving and even writing a check (as Frederick noted when he saw us clenching our pens at the end of the $80 lesson)—with more ease, grace, and economy. Actors rely on the technique as a tool for lessening performance anxiety and fine-tuning their, ahem, instrument.
