Best Stair Walk, August 2012
Build granitelike glutes and take in the landscape as you hike the public staircases notched into the city’s hillsides. The string of stairways in Beachwood Canyon is long (861 steps) and steep, but it’s a classic. Starting and ending near the Beachwood Cafe (look for the first staircase near 2800 Beachwood Drive), the route has plenty of free street parking and rises to thrilling city and mountain views. There’s great architecture and local history, too: Busby Berkeley, Humphrey Bogart, and Bugsy Siegel all lived in the area. This one’s a favorite of Los Angeles magazine contributor Charles Fleming, author of Secret Stairs: A Walking Guide to the Historic Staircases of Los Angeles, who leads group walks and offers a PDF of the hike on his Web site. » secretstairs-la.com.
