Marianne Kooimans

Best Under-the-radar L.A. Designer, August 2008

While Juan Carlos Obando, Koi Suwannagate, and Laura and Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte routinely (and rightfully) earn props in Vogue, Marianne Kooimans, a Venice designer who turns out elegant silk wrap skirts, handwoven brocade dresses, and fish-skin shoes, is a virtual secret. After training in design and sculpture, the Dutch transplant bought fabrics and created patterns for the L.A. label Dosa. She now makes hand-dyed clothing under her own label. Her skirt with lace rosettes and bits of hand-shaven silk bears the same arty femininity that some luxury brands do at half the price.
