Bureau of Sanitation
Best Compost Bins, August 2014
One person’s garbage is another’s garden gold. Turning food scraps and lawn trimmings into nutrient-rich soil for your vegetable patch is not only poetic, it’s good for the environment. The Bureau of Sanitation picks up 6,652 tons of refuse a day, and 25 percent of that is yard waste. To encourage residents to recycle their detritus, the City of Los Angeles subsidizes composters and worm bin sales, which can save you about $80 per bin. The sanitation department also conducts free 30-minute workshops in Griffith Park (every fourth Saturday of the month) that offer guidance on how to make the most of discarded organic material. You won’t learn that at Home Depot.
