Black Market

Best Graphic Tees, August 2009

You have to look elsewhere for T-shirts alerting the world that you’re a fan of the Stones, Obama, or gay marriage. But for artistic tees with less obvious messages, Black Market in West L.A. is the place to go. Some are open to interpretation, such as UNIF’s great white shark eating a bouquet of red flowers. Others provide snapshots of  L.A. culture, like Ultru’s photo-print of an Angelyne billboard on a white shirt. Eighties redux is a requirement for any shop along Sawtelle’s hipster retail enclave; the decade is covered here by Beta Unit’s geometric design in neon colors.
