Best Discount Flatware, August 2011
Since 1979, Bargain Fair, in the Fairfax District, has outfitted everyone from restaurateurs seeking cases of glassware to bachelors in need of basic plates and bowls. No section of the store—a bazaar-ish jumble with items spilling into the aisles—has sweeter deals than the flatware department, tucked in a nook near the saucepans. The 29 styles are stainless steel, and looks range from contemporary bistro to antique baroque. Pieces are sold individually: Dinner forks and spoons go for as little as 59 cents each, gravy ladles for $1.49, and fruit knives for $1.99. Time to plan a party.
