Best Native American Jewelry, May 2007
The workshop of Alan Somers
is cluttered with hammers, ingots, a massive anvil, and pattern stamps, some of which go back a hundred years. Part Native American, Somers began learning his craft from Navajo artisans 40 years ago. Today he creates earrings in traditional silver and turquoise ($150), belt buckles inlaid with silver and mottled stones ($800), and rock-star cowboy boots ornamented with silver and onyx ($15,000).
