Best Volunteer Opportunity, August 2010

Eight is the minimum age for volunteering (with a parent) at SOVA (Hebrew for “eat and be satisfied”), which runs three food pantries in Los Angeles. Kid jobs include sorting donations, bagging produce, and sometimes giving the food to the hungry. Children 12 and older can participate solo. Volunteers make advance arrangements to help out, but there’s no orientation or minimum obligation beyond a single four-hour shift. SOVA is part of Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles, but it provides for anyone in need.
