Ubatuba Acai

Best Acai Bowl, August 2015

“Rich in anti-oxidants” may not have the same ring as “drenched in syrup,” but the acai bowl represents the rare health food trend that appeases a morning sweet tooth. The base of the Brazilian breakfast staple is a lip-staining sorbet made from the purple Amazonian “superberries.” Ubatuba Acai, a chain owned by a Brazilian expat, with two locations in the Valley and one in Koreatown, concocts colorful bowls that evoke the beaches of Rio. The pulpy sorbet is tart and intense—softened by a drizzle of raw honey—and comes with a choice of nutrient-packed toppings like shredded coconut, hemp seeds, cacao nibs, and bee pollen.
