Mas Malo

The sign says it—this is Silver Lake’s hip Mexican joint, Malo, and more. Co-owners and music venue moguls Mitchell Frank and Jeff Ellermeyer kept (and cleaned) the ornate domed ceilings and patina-stained murals of the historic downtown space (once a Clifton’s Cafeteria) when they created three bars, a dining room, a dining loft, and an underground speakeasy-style lounge. The result is grand, to say the least. The food is a step up as well from the “chewy chips” and the beef and pickle tacos of the original (though both crowd favorites are offered). Huachinango al mojo de ajo is red snapper in a garlic-butter sauce. The Boyle Heights Picnic is a clever combo of chicken mole and potato salad. Organic lime juice, agave syrup, and tequila compose our favorite margarita in town. The bar’s other elaborate mescal and rum cocktails will make this a nightlife staple.
