Guy Gabriele and his daughter, Sylvie—the longtime owners of Manhattan Beach’s quiet French bistro Café Pierre—wisely noted the area’s changing tides. They opened up the café’s kitchen, threw in a communal table, increased the decibels, recruited chef Michael Fiorelli (Terranea’s Mar’sel), and brought a nouveau Italian trattoria to the surf town. We’ve seen this formula a lot lately, but not so close to the sand: house-made pastas and pizzas topped with a duck egg or fennel sausage as well as a slew of small plates and fancy toasts on killer bread. Come with a crew and try one of the family-style dishes, including a gorgeous prosciutto-stuffed rabbit porchetta. Vermentino and grignolino by the glass lubricate the cacophany.
